Compliance: GPS
Each rider will record his or her own tracks with their own GPS units. This self-policing practice will place of the compliance responsibility on the individual rider. Any equipment failure for any reason will result in added time penalties for the rider. This should not be overlooked or taken lightly. Rider should bring 2 sets of fresh lithium batteries for the rally, even if their GPS is hard-wired to their bike (as a back up)
A condition of passing technical inspection is each rider must provide an approved, functioning GPS unit at registration. The compliance team will label each unit with the riders name and riding number before “clearing” the unit out. Any and all data, maps, tracks and waypoints will be permanently erased from the unit and memory card (if applicable)
Approximately 20 minutes before starting time, compliance department will re-issue each rider their GPS in the staging area. The rider then becomes 100% solely responsible for recording his or her own tracks. The GPS should remain turned on the entire day until the rider reaches the completion of the day’s route.
Upon completion of the day’s route, a compliance official will “confiscate” the GPS, check that it is labeled, log it into inventory and promptly deliver the unit to the compliance area, where to the data will be uploaded into BAJA RALLY computers for scrutiny versus the day’s actual route. Penalties will be assessed for and meaningful deviations which: a) either create a short cut or b) create an advantageous (easier) deviation from the actual route.
Any added time penalties will be tallied in by the timing and scoring official before posting each rider’s official elapsed time.
Support Crew

There are no extra hotel beds available for support crews on Friday or Saturday night’s bivouac areas.

Travel in Mexico- (Registration and Insurance)
Liability Insurance Is Required By Law In Mexico
***IMPORTANT: Liability insurance is REQUIRED BY LAW in Mexico.
Effective January 1, 2012, liability insurance coverage is required in Mexico.
BAJA RALLY, LLC uses BAJA MEX Insurance and we highly recommend this company for their claims-paying practices which: A) Guarantee the use of OEM parts in all claims and B) Pays U.S. labor rates regardless of where the repairs are made. Our team at BAJA RALLY has first hand experience with other insurance carriers when neither OEM parts were used nor were U.S. labor rates paid. There are 2 kinds of insurance: the kind you buy and the kind you use. The price one pays for insurance only matters when its time to actually “use” the insurance.
FINALLY and most importantly, if you are involved in an automobile accident and cannot provide proof of insurance to law enforcement on the scene, you will most likely be arrested without exception, regardless of fault.

Proof Of Registration Required To Bring Motorcycle Into Mexico
***IMPORTANT: Proof of Current Registration For All Vehicles REQUIRED When Entering Mexico.
It is very difficult to enter into Mexico with any vehicle that is not properly registered. It is 99.9% unlikely you can enter into Mexico with a motorcycle that is not properly registered. When you cross into Mexico with a pickup truck that has a motorcycle(s) in back, you will very likely be asked to show “registration”. If you cannot verify that the bike is registered to the driver or passenger in the vehicle, you will be returned to the US

Satellite Phone Rentals
We have arranged for a very good deal on Sat Phone Rentals from SatPhone Service because they are committed to motorsports and especially motorcycle events in BAJA. Unlike many so-called “deals”, these packages are “all in” which means there is no added non-sense of security deposit or activation fees. SatPhone Service is the only carrier we know of who has an all-in rental package. BAJA RALLY recommends that all participants have a sat phone with them and ready to use in the event of a remote breakdown or other incident. A satellite phone is good insurance that you can communicate when you need to even if you are never in that position. Having one and not needing it better than needing it and not having one.
